August 30, 2015

A memorial service celebrating the life of Edward E. Schilling, 90, of Granville, will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, September 4, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church, 110 W. Broadway, Granville with Rev. Janice Hilkerbaumer as celebrant. A graveside service will be held at Salem Cemetery in Upper Sandusky, Ohio at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 5, 2015.

Ed was a patent attorney with Dow Chemical for 34 years before retiring and moving to Newark. He was the eleventh and final child born on the farm to Jacob and Minerva (Minnie) who survived infancy (1924). The farm is in Wyandot County near Upper Sandusky, and he grew up on the farm, which is still owned in part by his oldest nephew, Donald. Ed survived polio when he was 3 and his mother passed away when he was 7.

After earning a Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Ohio Northern University in 1944, Ed went to work for Owens Corning in order to help his country by working with the defense industry during WWII.  The aftereffects of polio left him ineligible for military service. A year later He continued his studies in chemistry at The Ohio State University where he was awarded a Master’s degree (1949) and he worked as a teaching assistant teaching chemistry.  He met his wife Anne at Ohio State on a blind date and they were married in December of 1947.  They moved to Los Angeles so Ed could work on a doctorate in chemistry, but the start of their family caused a change of plans.  Ed worked as a research chemist but missed the Midwest.  He joined Dow Chemical as a patent agent and was sent by the company to night law school while working days for a Dow subsidiary.  He completed his Juris Doctorate at Indiana University/Purdue University School of Law in Indianapolis in 1965 and passed the Michigan Bar on his first attempt.  He enjoyed his work which led him to Washington, DC, Canada, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

Ed was a member of Phi Mu Delta Fraternity, Kiwanis Club of Granville, Licking County Computer Society, and First Presbyterian Church of Granville.  He loved to travel both internationally and domestically, most especially Canada, United Kingdom, and his family's motherland of Switzerland. He will be remembered as a loving father and devoted husband.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Anne Elizabeth (Novicky) Schilling; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and John P. Keats, M.D., J (Jacquelyn ) and Kevin Brooks, M.D.; son, Edward Schilling, Jr. Ph.D., and his wife Beth; grandchildren, Andrew, Ariele, Alex, Nick, Patrick (Amanda), Sean (Sara), Katy (Shawn), Daniel, and Jennifer; great grandchildren, Scarlett, Avery, Charlotte, and Henry; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his brothers, Henry, Alfred, Ernest, John, Homer, and Harold; and sisters, Bertha, Mary, Martha, and Clara.
