Frederick B. Schelhorn, Ph.D., died at home in Granville, Ohio on Wednesday, June 10, 2015. He was born August 10, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA to Frederick G. and Dora A. Schelhorn.
Dr. Schelhorn graduated from Abington High School in 1934, received a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1939 (Pi Mu Epsilon, Tau Beta Phi, Alpha Chi Sigma), and his MS and PhD degrees in Paper Chemistry in 1941 and 1943 from the Institute of Paper Chemistry at Lawrence College in Appleton, WI. He was a 1953 alumnus of the Harvard Advanced Management Program. While at the Institute he met, and on May 15, 1943, he married his wife of 60 years, Amalia "Molly".
Having a career focus in the pulp and paper industry, Dr. Schelhorn joined the Brown Company (Berlin, NH) in 1943. He served as navigator for the USS Fillmore (APA 83) in the Pacific theatre during WWII, and returned to Berlin, NH at the close of the war to a position as paper division general superintendent. He joined National Container in 1953 managing Valdosta, GA and Jacksonville, FL mills; Owens-Illinois (Toledo, OH) in 1956, serving as the VP of manufacturing and of research and development; and Tennessee River Pulp and Paper (Counce, TN) in 1963 as resident manager, and in 1967 as the TRP&P President. In 1976 he became a VP of the parent company Packaging Corporation of America, and in 1979 a Senior VP in the corporate office (Evanston, IL) responsible for three mills, PCA solid wood operations, and land management. He established the first R&D center for PCA.
Dr. Schelhorn had lifelong interests in history, business, technical subjects, the arts, and the varied pursuits of his family. He was active in many civic organizations. He served as the President of the Tennessee Manufacturers Association and the North Carolina State University Pulp and Paper Foundation (1971-73). Dr. Schelhorn was an inventor on four issued US patents. He was a member of St. Luke's Church in Granville and a mason in good standing with the Gorham-Sabatis Lodge #73 in Gorham, NH, and a 32nd degree mason in the Scottish Rite in Corinth, MS.
Surviving are his son Peter J. Schelhorn of Atlanta, GA; daughters Mary A. Peterson of Washington, DC, Jean E. Schelhorn of Granville, OH, and Amalia J. Schelhorn of Victoria, BC; nine grandchildren and a great-grandson; and his beloved golden retriever, Barnabas.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Amalia and his son Frederick Paul.
