A graveside service celebrating the life of Robert E. Schilling, 89, of Newark, will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, November 26, 2016 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville with full military honors rendered by the Licking County Veterans Alliance. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 P.M. at the McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St, in Granville prior to the graveside service.

Bob passed away November 20, 2016 at SharonBrooke Assisted Living Facility. He was born January 25, 1927 to the late Rushie J. “Dutch” and Dalpha Marie (Frye) Schilling. After graduating from Zanesville High School, Bob served in the U.S. Army infantry from 1945 to 1947. He then worked in oil fields and attended Marietta College. He also worked at Pure Oil/Union Oil Company at the Heath Refinery from 1953 until its closing in 1970 and then General Electric in Worthington until his retirement. Bob said he never had a job he did not like.

On November 27, 1953 Bob married Carol Kasson and they were married 60 years until her death in 2013. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Esther Schlichter and Ruth Savage; and his brother John F. “Fred” Schilling.

Bob was a member of Newark Maennorchor, Moose Lodge, and American Legion and had many cherished lifetime friends.

Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Mark Owens of Cincinnati; grandchildren, Christina of Westerville, and Stephen of Cincinnati; sister-in-law, Evelyn; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at SharonBrooke for caring for Bob during the last two years, his previous caregivers from Home Instead, and the many friends and healthcare personnel who provided care and support to Bob and his family during the past three years.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Cincinnati, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45229, which Bob supported for many years.
