Edward Floering Obituary

Edward “Jake” O. Floering, 97, of Granville, formerly of Estes Park, CO, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2018 at his residence at Middleton Assisted Living.  He was born in Toledo, OH in 1920 to the late Edward and Gertrude Floering.

Edward was a 1939 graduate of Libbey High School.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army, 719th Railway Operating Battalion, proudly serving his country during WWII stationed in N. Africa and Italy. He came close to death in Italy after contracting malaria. After the war, he continued his career as a freight conductor for New York Central and Penn Central Railroads until his retirement in 1982.

Edward was a 32nd degree member of the Ohio Northern Light Lodge #40 F. & A.M., Zenobia Shrine Club, Shriners International, and Disabled American Veteran Chapter 13. He was an avid weightlifter making physical fitness a priority up until his recent years. He loved baseball and played many positions including pitcher having a knuckle ball causing problems for many batters. He tried out for the Detroit Tigers Baseball Team but was unsuccessful due to poor running ability.

He enjoyed the outdoors and loved his railroad job. After retiring he moved to Estes Park CO, joined the Mountaineers Hiking Club and hiked thousands of miles in the Rocky Mountains and surrounding areas, canoed 120 miles of the Green and Colorado Rivers, camped in wilderness areas, and participated in archeology expeditions for early Indian artifacts. When his hiking time decreased, he enjoyed golfing with his friends. Ed was dependable, frugal, generous, intelligent, strong, and a man of character.

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. David and Jayne Floering of Granville; grandchildren and their spouses, Benjamin (Lisa) Floering of San Jose, CA, Wendy (Dr. Michael) Duffey of Granville, Allison (Zoltan) Stefan of Los Angeles, CA, and Bradley (Lindsay) Floering of Lafayette, CA; great-grandchildren, Katherine, Michael, and Elizabeth Floering; Liam and Isla Duffey; Cruz Stefan; and Blake and Beckham Floering.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sons, Douglas and Donald Floering; and brothers, Glen and Raymond Floering.

A graveside service will be held at Lake Township Cemetery 3550 Walbridge Road, Millbury Ohio 43447, Wednesday, July 25, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with military honors rendered by the VFW Post 9963.
