Ellen Miller Obituary

Heaven just got kinder and gentler with the death of Ellen R. Miller a spiritual counselor, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend who left this world a better place through her dedication and friendship.

Ellen was born in Kenton, Ohio in 1936 to the late Louis and Marjorie Reeder. She grew up in Granville, graduated from Granville High School, Denison University, and earned her Master’s Degree in Alcohol and Drug Addiction Ministry from Methodist Theological School, after the age of 50. Ellen was a pioneer for women of her generation. She was a spiritual counselor, worked for Mary Evans at First Community Church, founded the childcare program at The Ohio State University Newark, was Assistant Pastor at Centenary United Methodist Church, was the first Director of the Family Program at Shepherd Hill and later directed the Spiritual Program there. She was active in Al-Anon helping families recover, served as a counselor with a focus on children of addicts, and touched so many lives with her spiritual gifts and devotion. Ellen will be missed but her impact on those she touched will remain.

Surviving are her children Louis Miller and Lisa Miller; grandchildren, Wil, Morgan, Olivia, and Lucas; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Beth and David Price; niece and nephew, Sally Schaadt and Hugh Price; and dear, life-long friend, Lee Sheffler.

In addition to her parents, Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Miller who died in 1995.

The family will receive friends January 10, 2019 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville.

A memorial service celebrating Ellen’s life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on January 11, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church, 110 W. Broadway, Granville with Rev. Janice Hilkerbaumer as celebrant. A private graveside service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville.

Memorial contributions, for the gift of recovery, would be cherished and may be directed to Shepherd Hill, 200 Messimer Dr., Newark, OH 43055.
