Gregory Stephen Helwig, 77, of Granville OH passed away June21, 2026, in Newark OH. He was born November 6, 1948, in Carpinteria CA, the son of Norman Christian Helwig and Lillian Ryan.

He graduated from Cate School in Carpinteria. Greg attended the University of California Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara, and The Ohio State University, earning his Ph.D. in Chemistry.

He was employed as a chemist by Owens-Corning Fiberglas Science and Research Center in Granville. On December 27, 1980, Greg married Barbara “Barbe” Philipps, who survives him along with sons Erich and Tristan.

He is predeceased by his parents and a half-brother. Greg was an avid golfer who was on the links as often as possible, especially after retirement from OCF.

There will be no calling hours or service per the family’s wishes. The Alzheimer’s Society would appreciate any contributions made in Greg’s memory.
