A memorial service celebrating the life of James W. Pyle, 63, of Granville will be held Saturday, January 5, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at The Reese Conference Center on the Newark campus of The Ohio State University. A private graveside service will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newark.

Mr. Pyle, an attorney and partner of Reese, Pyle, Drake, and Meyer P.L.L. died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007 at the Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus. Jim was born March 29, 1944 in Newark to the late Glen and Lillian (Schauwecker) Pyle.

A 1962 graduate of Newark High School, Jim lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He was named to the first All-Ohio team as an offensive end and was co-captain. Jim would later be inducted into the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. He was a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, Key Club, and received the Newark B'nai B'rith Good Citizenship Award. Jim furthered his education at Cornell University graduating in 1966. While there, he played football all four years and lettered in 1965. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, the Sphinx Head Senior Honor Society, a group that recognizes Cornell's senior class members who have given their time and passion to the university. The Society was founded in 1890 by a group of senior males whose goal is to uplift the Cornell community. It is the university's oldest secret senior honor society. Mr. Pyle then graduated in 1969 from the University of Michigan Law School where he was a member of the Law Review.

Jim was a member of the Newark Ski Club, Granville Tennis Club, the Ohio State Bar Association, Fellow of the Ohio State Bar Foundation, the Licking County Law Library where he served as Secretary-Treasurer and on the Board for over 25 years, and the Newark Public Library Board for 18 years. He served as President of the Licking County Bar Association, Newark Lions Club and the Newark Area Chamber of Commerce 1993-1994.

Surviving are his wife Jeanetta  (Beale) Pyle, whom he married Dec. 7, 1985; sister-in-law, Gladys Weinstock of Spring, TX; nieces, Leigh Ann Weinstock, South Miami Beach, FL, Amy Murphy and her husband Nicholas of Spring, TX; nephew Matthew Weinstock and his wife Jena of The Hague, Netherlands; grand nephew, Ian Murphy; cousins, Gerald Provin and June Valenti both of Newark.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by one sister, Jane Pyle Ogden.
