Myra Katherine (Rowley) Gallant died July 21, 2025, at the age of 97. She was born February 9, 1928, in Detroit, Michigan, the only child of Laurie G. Rowley, MD, and Eva May (Cable) Rowley. She grew up in Waterford Township, Michigan, where she graduated from Pontiac Central High School in 1945. She attended Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1949 and a Bachelor of Music in 1950. While at OWU she was a Student Pastor at Asbury Methodist Church for four years and a member of Pi Beta Phi, Mortar Board, Mu Phi Epsilon and Pi Kappa Lambda.
Myra’s teaching career began as a Music Teacher in Waterford Township Schools. In 1951 she married Thomas F. Gallant and moved to Baltimore, Maryland. As an educator she taught in Glen Burnie, Maryland; Baltimore, Maryland; substituted in Licking County schools; and taught music at St. Francis de Sales School in Newark, Ohio, from 1987 to 1992.
In 1953 the couple moved to Huron, Ohio, where Myra directed the Presbyterian Youth Choir and was President of the Women’s Association and an ordained Elder. In 1965 they moved to Granville, where she has been an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church, Director of Christian Education, President of the Women’s Association, a Stephen Minister and active in the Scioto Valley Presbytery in various leadership roles. She and Tom served as members of the Church Relations Council of Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa, North Carolina, from 2001 to 2007. Myra was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, initiated in 1946 in Pontiac, Michigan. She served on the P.E.O. Executive Board of the Ohio State Chapter for six years and as State President from 1983 to 1984.
After their retirements, Myra and Tom traveled to all seven continents and went around the world with the Semester at Sea program in the Fall of 1993. They wintered until 2013 at their home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, where they were affiliate members of the First Presbyterian Church and where Myra volunteered at the Duvall Home in Glenwood, Florida. In 2013 they moved to Kendal at Granville Continuing Care facility, which later became Otterbein at Granville.
Myra is survived by her husband of 74 years, Thomas F. Gallant, a son Stephen (wife Jennifer, deceased), Bay Village, Ohio; a daughter Katherine Nutt (husband Dennis) and their daughters Lindsey and Sarah, Virginia; a son Richard (wife Amy), New York, and their daughters Nancy Porter (husband Matt), Utah, and Megan and her son Atlas, New York; a son Bruce and his daughter Myra, Illinois; and a son Ronald (wife Jennifer) and their sons Carter and Austin, Virginia.
