Charlotte Rhoades Obituary

Charlotte Lockard Rhoades was born and raised on the family farm in Chillicothe, Ohio, daughter of the late Carroll (Ike) Lockard and Gayla Tarbill Lockard. Charlotte passed away due to COVID 19 at Dublin Methodist Hospital on December 16, 2020 at the age of 80.

After graduating from the class of 1958 at Huntington High School, she attended the Ohio State University and received a degree in chemistry. She worked in cancer research at the university before taking up employment at Chemical Abstract Service.

Charlotte became a trailblazer in her professional and public life and was one of the pioneers of women getting into commercial real estate. She served as president and director of numerous real estate organizations. Her driven and determined personality was instrumental in bringing State Route 315 to fruition.

In later life, she enjoyed many years of world travel and culture with her companion, Hubert (Bert) Cushman. In retirement, Charlotte had no intention of slowing down. She became a much-loved and respected volunteer at Dublin Methodist Hospital, working all the hours others didn’t want to in the mother infant and emergency departments. She particularly enjoyed contributing time as a poll worker during elections and as a standardized patient at OSU College of Medicine, role playing to advance the training of soon to be doctors. Her no nonsense attitude and practical approach meant she became the go-to person for many of those around her when it came to advice on life challenges.

She is survived by two daughters, Stephanie Rhoades of Piketon and Cyndi Rhoades of London, England; sisters Patricia (Robert) Barclay and Bonnie Lockard and brother, George Lockard; grandchildren Cary Davidson and Colleen McNulty; several cousins, nephews and a niece. She is predeceased by one nephew and two cousins, Bert Cushman and her two deeply adored cats Harold and Baxter.

Due to COVID there will be no calling hours. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home of Granville is serving the planning. Online condolences may be expressed www.mcpeekhoekstra.com.
