Harriett Stone Obituary

Harriett F. Stone a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passionate gardener, passed away November 17, 2021 at Kendal at Granville, a community that she helped to establish. Harriett was 89. She was born in Forsythe, Georgia to the late Theodore B. and Lela L. Faxon. She was preceded in death by her husband Franz T. Stone.

A graduate of Denison University, Harriett returned to her alma mater later in life where she worked as Director of Alumni Affairs. She was a fabulous cook and a proprietor of a gourmet cooking store known as Good Things. She was known for her beautiful gardens, and worked to make her community a better place. She was a member of the Junior League, charter member of Kendal at Granville and later served on the National Kendal Board. Throughout her life she remained a faithful member of the Episcopal Church and was most recently a member at St. Luke’s Church in Granville.

Harriett, known as Hchy to her grandchildren was a lifelong enthusiast of sports and the outdoors. Born a die-hard Cleveland Indians fan she would be happy to tell you that she was there in 48 for the final out to win the World Series. As long as the sport did not involve snow Mom was all in. She was a fabulous tennis and platform tennis player spending countless weekends at Rocky Fork Country Club playing the games she loved with friends she loved. Spring trips to Pink Sands to fish and play tennis created memories and more than a few tall tales. Summers were spent at the family Island on Lake Temagami, Ontario. There Harriett and Franz created a paradise that gave their young family a front row seat to the raw beauty of nature. Mom was an avid fisherman and loved to go for evening outings where the slightest nibble would result in the instantaneous proclamation …. Ooooh this is a BIG ONE! Often followed by a tale of one that got away. Her Canadian friendships were cherished.

Harriett’s soul mates came with four legs, first Chloe the Springer Spaniel, and then Webster the West Highland terrier. Mom’s devotion to her dogs was complete and there was little doubt about the pecking order in the family.

Harriett’s help with bringing Kendal to Granville was an achievement she was extremely proud of. Her long association with Denison, first as a student, and then in the Alumni Affairs office led her to believe that Granville would be an ideal location for a Kendal campus. Motivated by the desire to live in a Kendal community, she applied her many organizational talents to the task, and helped make it happen.

The family would like to express their deepest appreciation for the care Harriett received at both Licking Memorial and the skilled nursing center at Kendal. Her friendships with the staff at Kendal, established since the opening of the facility, gave Harriett a loving community in which to thrive.

Surviving are her children and their families, Bruce (Peggy) son Ben (Kelly), daughter Maggie(Seth), Julie (Aaron) sons James {Lindsey)and Peter, Susan (Harry) son Max and daughter Alexia, and Kate (Brad) and daughter Andress and son Sam, great grandchildren Zoe, Lila, and Charlie and her canine companion and Kendal community dog, Webster.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Granville, Friday July 1, at 10:30 am with a reception immediately following in the Amelia Room at Kendal. The family would also like to invite friends to Bruce and Peggy’s house, 751 South Cassingham, Bexley after 5:00 on Friday to celebrate Harriett.
