Lucille "Larry" L Worcester

A memorial service celebrating the life of Lucille Larrabee “Larry” Worcester, 96, of Granville, Ohio, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 15, 2021, at First Presbyterian Church, 110 West Broadway, Granville. Interment will take place at a later date at East Cemetery in Hollis, New Hampshire. For those unable to attend the service in Granville, it will be livestreamed online at granpres.org/llw. It also will be available on-demand following the service.

Larry passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at Kendal at Granville, where she was a founding resident. She was born on June 2, 1925, in Nashua, New Hampshire, to the late Ruth Barker Larrabee and James Holland Larrabee and considered herself to be a happily transplanted New Englander.

A graduate of the University of New Hampshire, Larry was a French major and member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. After marrying Russell Dutton Worcester in 1949, the couple moved to the Midwest, eventually settling in Lebanon, Indiana, where they raised their two daughters. She loved her life as a homemaker and community volunteer. A member of First Presbyterian Church in Lebanon, she directed the adult, children’s and handbell choirs there, and she served as a deacon.

Her civic service focused on children and the quality of life in her community. Larry was an active volunteer with the Girl Scouts, serving not only as a troop leader but also as a member of the Board of Directors of the Central Indiana Council.

Music was a large part of Larry’s life. In addition to her church music, she sang in local choirs, and she loved playing the piano, sharing her talents in the community, as well as at home. She instilled that love of music in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A social spirit at her core, Larry delighted in organizing festive get-togethers with her large circle of friends. From her younger days in New Hampshire to her family life in Lebanon to her “meet and greet” gatherings at Kendal, she was always quick to arrange for the merriment of others. She was a gracious hostess.

Larry surrounded herself with beauty. She created it in her home “nest” and admired it in natural settings, from the rocky coast and mountains of New England to the fields, wildflowers and lush woods of the Midwest.

Combining hospitality, beauty, and creative skills, Larry loved to decorate the front door of each of her homes. She enjoyed many forms of handwork, especially in a social setting, and fashioned custom clothing for her children and grandchildren. She also created toys, dolls, and high fashion for many a stylish Barbie. Larry created knitted scarves and Christmas vests for the family as well as baby blankets for each grandchild and great-grandchildren to be.

She enjoyed travel and spent much of her time on the road with her family, driving to countless locations across the country. Their most visited destination was Worcester Place, the family’s 1740 home in Hollis, New Hampshire. Larry will be remembered for capably maintaining this family home for future generations to enjoy.

She loved to play — and win — games. Her competitive spirit playing bridge, euchre, dominoes, and charades was both admired and feared by her opponents.

A source of light, Larry was positive, dynamic, exuberant, vivacious, gregarious, intelligent, and a life-long learner. She was open to a world of possibilities, greeting each day as a new beginning.

Left to remember her as a remarkable and loving force are Lucille’s daughters, Joy Hire and her husband Jack of Granville, and Deborah Woodard of Bloomington, Minnesota; grandchildren and their spouses, Katy and Perry Accardo, Christina and Steven Gersh, John Russell Woodard, and Sarah Worcester Woodard; great-grandchildren, Carter and Hayes Gersh; and sister, Jean Flagg.

In addition to her parents, Larry was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Russ, who died February 3, 2000.
