Owen Herbert Dysart, II Obituary

Owen H. (Herb) Dysart passed away peacefully at his home on Friday May 21st, 2021, surrounded by his devoted family and friends. He had been sick a very long time, battling the effects of Agent Orange, and his final days were lived out exactly as he wished with the tireless help of his caregivers and family.

The family will receive visitors at McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville, Ohio on Tuesday May 25th from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M.. The final farewell service will be on Wednesday May 26th at 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home followed by burial in Maple Grove Cemetery, Granville Ohio with military honors.

Herb was born on April 28th, 1952 in Newark to Owen H. Dysart Sr. and Martha (Horst) Weiss.

He enlisted in the Army on his 17th birthday and did a tour in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971. After returning from Vietnam, he went back to high school and graduated from Newark Senior High School with the class of 1973. Then returned to the Army, serving as a sergeant with the 2nd Armed Calvary in Germany until 1979. He was a very proud veteran and patriot.

Herb married his best friend, Rose Ann Stevenson, in 1980 and together they have raised three children. Sarah Rose Dysart, Kyrsten Dell Dysart (Matthew) Dancy and Owen P. Dysart. Including his wife and children Herb is survived by his two granddaughters, Adrienne Rose Dancy and Layla Jane Dancy, who gave him more joy than he could have ever imagined.

Herb will be missed by his large and loving family of brothers, sisters, sisters in law and brothers in law. Surviving him are brothers, Larry (Diane) Dysart, Brad (Stephanie) Dysart, Kristine Dysart, Lynn (Dysart) Foit, Karen Wheeler, and Danny Weiss. He is also survived by his family of in-laws including, Patty Stevenson, Kathleen York, Paul Diemoz, Charlotte (Frank) McDonough, Betty Stevenson, and Sally Smith Stevenson.

The number of nieces, nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews is too many to list here, but each and every one of them held a place in his life and heart and he wanted them all to know that.

Herb was preceded in death by his grandparents, Horst and Dysart. Also preceding him were his mother-in-law Sadie (Sally) Stevenson, sister and brother in-law Sandy (Ray) Hutchinson, brothers in law, Ollie, George and Gene Stevenson, Tom York and sister-law Kathy Diemoz.

If you knew Herbie, you knew he was a big person in every way. Always the life of the party he loved to dance, golf, play and umpire baseball and softball, raise money for charities by organizing golf outings and fundraising events at the VFW and Eagles and taking part in the life and activities of his kids and his Union Brothers from Local 189 where he was a pipefitter for 35 years.

He loved his country, all kinds of music, the New York Yankees, Nascar and his many friends at the variety of clubs he belonged to and his work, and his special good friends Chuck (Kristie) Rittenhouse and Roy Roberts, who visited often, keeping his spirits up and a smile on his face. But most of all he loved his wife, his extensive family and his home.

Rose Ann and the kids want to say a special thank you to the hospice team at Heartland Hospice, Ashley and Lori. Also, the home health aides from First Light. But the biggest thanks go to his sister Karen Wheeler, whose tender care in the last days was a source of great comfort and peace to Herb and to them.

They say a person’s life isn’t measured in wealth or possessions, but by the amount of happy and good memories he leaves behind when he is gone. If that is true, then Herb Dysart was a very rich man indeed. He will be remembered well.
