Susan Cramer Obituary

Susan Cramer of Granville died Monday, August 1, 2022, of kidney and liver cancer. She was 67.

Born Susan Levinson in New Jersey in 1954, she was educated in the Bergenfield public schools and graduated from the University of Cincinnati School of Design, Art and Architecture in 1979.

Susan was a strong backer of environmental and social activism and a passionate believer in the power of good design, the ability of treasured objects to tell a personal story. As such, she was an inveterate yard sale shopper, and her own giant sale was somewhat locally famous.

She was above all a proponent of good books and good writing, and not shy about sharing her opinion of what constituted both.

Susan and her husband Bruce Cramer, executive director of the historic Bryn Du Mansion, moved from Cincinnati to Granville in 1994. She served on its public library board of directors for 15 years, and was a driving force behind its 2008 expansion.

She wrote the institutional histories of a hospital and two golf courses, including the course at Ohio State. And she spent years as a writing coach for middle schoolers in the state’s Power of the Pen program, culminating with a writing competition each spring.

She was an avid kayaker and an accomplished quilter, frequently found behind a sewing machine or gathering friends on paddling trips on the waters here and in South Carolina.

Susan leaves behind her beloved husband Bruce; her daughter and son-in-law, Abbey and Tony Murry of Plain City, Ohio and her grandchildren Walker and Levi Murry; her son and daughter-in law Matthew and Erica Cramer of Carmel, Ind.; and her sister Caryn Breen of Ft. Thomas, Ky., and brothers Warren and Larry Levinson of New Jersey.

A celebration of Susan’s life will be held from 5-8 P.M. Thursday, August 4, 2022 at Bryn Du Mansion, 537 Jones Road, Granville, Ohio with remembrances being shared at 7:00 P.M. Online condolences may be expressed at www.mcpeekhoekstra.com.

In lieu of flowers, she would prefer donations to the Granville Public Library and the group 4ocean, https://www.4ocean.com/products/pound-plus-subscription. She was possessed of a biting wit and open heart, and she is sorely missed.
