William Holland Obituary

William J. Holland’s life journey began in Newark, Ohio where he was born to the late Ben E. and Helen A. (Hupp) Holland. He passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at his home surrounded by family at the age of 87.

An Army veteran, Bill was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and completed Master’s work at Ohio University and The Ohio State University. During his senior year of college he toured the orient with the Theater Department of Denison University, a memorable experience.  He began his professional career teaching American history at Newark High School in 1962.  In 1975 Bill began working at Newark Air Force Base as a race relations instructor.  He retired after 21 years there, having risen to the position of management analyst. He also had a second career as a caseworker at Moundbuilders Guidance Center.

Together with his wife of 52 years, Cherie, they raised three daughters and cherished their three grandchildren and one great grandson. Bill was a history buff and there wasn’t a fort he didn’t love. He was well read, traveled, and enjoyed a good Buckeye’s game. He will lovingly be remembered for his broad-mindedness, willingness to help others, his kindness, and non-judgmental and gentle nature.

Surviving are his wife, Cherie; daughters and their husbands, Sarah and Glen Brich of Granville, Liza Wheeler and Jeremy Philipps of Newark, and Vanessa and Gar Seigla of Columbus; grandchildren, Olivia and Harrison Brich, and Emma (Isaac) Steinbrecher; and great grandson, Silas William Steinbrecher.

A private inurnment will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date at St. Luke’s Church where Bill was a faithful member and previously served as a member of the Vestry.
