Phillip L. Stockdale

A Funeral Mass for Phillip L. Stockdale, 77, of Newark, will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, January 18, 2016 at The Church of Saint Edward the Confessor, 785 Newark Granville Rd., Granville with Monsignor Paul P. Enke as celebrant. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 17th from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. at the McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., in Granville.

A devoted father and grandfather, Phil passed away Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at the Flint Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newark. He was born in Newark in 1938 to the late Paul and Jean (Andrews) Stockdale.

A 1956 graduate of Newark High School, Phil was also a member of the golf team and helped contribute to their being the COL Championship team from 1954 through 1956. After his graduation, he served six months active duty in the Army Reserve and would continue to serve locally for another seven and a half years. In 1958, Phil enrolled at The Ohio State University where he was a member of the reserve golf team with Jack Nicklaus. At that time, NCAA prohibited freshman from playing varsity sports. The following year, Phil left O.S.U. to become assistant professional at Granville Golf Course where he would later become head professional and General Manager from 1962 until his retirement in 2000. During his career, he became a member of the PGA of America in 1964, and in 2014, he celebrated 50 years as a member of the Half Century Club in the PGA. Additionally, he was awarded Professional of the Year from the Southern Ohio Sectional of the PGA. From 1983 -1987, he served as an officer of the same Section as was awarded the prestigious Bill Strausbaugh Award. In 2007, Phil was awarded membership into the SOPGA Hall of Fame.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Kathryn; sons and daughters-in-law, Mitch and Barb Stockdale and David and Lynn Stockdale; and grandchildren, Jennifer, Brian, Ashley, Tyler, Emily, and Nathan.
